We ventured out and took a rainy-day trip to get our veggies & herbs for our raised garden bed this week and it was absolutely divine. The Home Depot was pretty quiet, especially the garden center which is partly outdoors, so I had plenty of time to stand around and contemplate my herb & veggie choices. Alea even cooperated and told me we we absolutely had to get strawberry plants. Which we did not… because she forgot about it before we left and strawberries aren’t something we planned on or budgeted for!
Now it’s the time you’ve all been waiting for. The big reveal of this project we’ve been working on and leading up to for weeks now. I’m so excited to share with you the raised garden bed that we’ve built with the help of The Home Depot and all the vegetables and herbs we’ve planted in the garden bed as well. For those of you who are still contemplating whether or not this is a project you’d like to tackle this summer, I hope this post helps to convince you. And if nothing, I hope the before and after pictures impress you! (I’m such a sucker for before and after pictures!)
Here’s all that we decided to plant:
One correction though: the cucumbers will have to be planted outside of the garden bed because they’re not really conducive to the space we have. Since they’re a vine and spread out, we’ll have to plant them along side the garden bed so they don’t overtake and kill the rest of the veggies & herbs.
**Keep that in mind if you want to plant cucumbers!**
Also, some helpful hints with tomato plants, pepper plants, and other vegetable plants that gain height, tomato cages are very useful. We haven’t purchased them yet, but they’re the next item on our Home Depot shopping list. We waited too long to get our cages last year and our tomato plants started toppling over before we could save them. We ended up using two wooden skewers and some yarn… I’m not even joking… to tie them up and that’s what we ended up using for the rest of the summer. This year we’re going to do it the right way and set up the cages so the plants can grow up with the cage.
Alea and I woke up bright and early, ate breakfast and immediately got our messy clothes on and went outside to plant. I didn’t tell her we were going to do this ahead of time, so it was a fun surprise for her. Any excuse to play with dirt, right? We got out all of our vegetables and herbs that we bought at Home Depot and planted some seeds for herbs as well. We didn’t have an extra shovel on hand for Alea to use for her “gardening,” so I had to improvise and let her use a spoon from the kitchen. She thought that was just about the silliest thing ever!
We are so happy with how our garden bed has turned out. I love the little vegetable sprouts lined up in a row & all the gorgeous color it adds to this space that used to be so dull and grey. It’s really brightened things up on this side of our house! I have a feeling this is going to be my new happy place. My new place to escape for a couple minutes to water our growing vegetables. I just find it so exciting that I’ll be able to feed my little family with some of the vegetables that we grew! That’s going to be the most rewarding part of all.
Isn’t the difference just amazing? We love how much it’s brightened up that unused space and I love that it’s cleaned things up a bit. Before the area was just a dumping ground for whatever trash blew into that area. I swear, everyone’s mail gets blown into that little corner at the end of a windy day, and it was just a very poorly maintained area. I’m just so happy to add another space in our yard that I’m truly proud of. I’m so proud of all the work we put into this project and I love knowing that soon our garden will literally bare the fruits of our labor!

This makes me SO jealous that I don’t have a yard! It looks great!
Thank you!
WOW! Your garden turned out absolutely gorgeous! I’m so excited to see that you’ll be planting mint and basil, they make a huge difference in recipes! Personally, the only thing I would have done differently would be to grow a few fruits too. Maybe watermelon or raspberries?
Are you planning on doing any cute DIY markers so you know which plants are which? I think that would be a small detail that would make it even better!
Danielle at Framed Frosting
I agree! We were going to do strawberries, but then I completely forgot when I was at Home Depot to pick out my plants! And I will definitely be doing some fun DIY markers!
This looks so fabulous girl!! Awesome job!
Oooh! A raised garden bed has been on my wish list for some time now. Poor neglected yard. Yours looks amazing!
Thank you! It’s a quick and easy project to complete! I hope you’ll consider it!
I love the idea of a raised garden bed. I don’t like where my garden is now and I think this would be a great solution.
It most certainly would! And Home Depot even has raised garden bed kits you can use!
Something like this would be great for us. We have a Great Dane who LOVES to just roll around in the grass. For a normal sized dog that wouldn’t be much of an issue around a garden but for her she’d destroy it with one roll lol. I’m going to bookmark this for when we want to do ours later as yours looks AUH-MAZING!!
Thank you so much Cassie! Yes, I think this garden would definitely be “Great Dane proof” 😉
the hard work paid off, it has some great herbs which will make dinner so delicious. Might be trying a small basic gardening, no space. But thanks for the tips!
That always works, too! We used flower pots for our veggies last year and the year before and it worked just fine!
Love it! You can actually plant your cucumbers in that raised space, just add a trellis and “train” them up the trellis. Once a cucumber starts growing, get some panty hose (will stretch as the cucumber grows) and put the cucumber in it and tie it to the trellis so that the trellis supports the weight of the cucumber instead of the plant. 🙂
oh…and cut the panty hose in sections and just tie off one end so you can use the whole thing instead of one panty hose to one cucumber 🙂
What?! Seriously? That just blows my mind! I’m going to have to figure that out for next time. We already planted our zucchini & cucumbers outside of the raised bed! Hope they still do okay there!
Love your cute little garden! Can’t wait to someday have my own garden 🙂
Thank you so much 🙂 It’s been so much fun to create!
Ah I’m just getting into gardening but I need to keep some flowers alive before I try any veggies!
Ha! I’m hoping I do better this year than I did last!
I love all the beautiful green pictures! Definitely inspired to work on the outside of our house now!
So glad we could inspire you!
Looks great Chelsea!
Great Job!!!!
Mine is still waiting to begin
I was going to include tomatoes and strawberries
You have inspired me!
I’m so happy to have inspired you! This garden is my pride & joy now and we’re SO excited to start eating the veggies that grow from it!
This looks great! I love the idea of a raised garden bed. I have had a hard time keeping my docs out of my regular garden so I stopped gardening. Perhaps I could do it this way and they would leave it alone. I think I might try it!
First…your photos are amazing!! The one with the cup of coffee and the quote? Yeah, that’s now my screen saver!! Your garden is going to do so well because it was planted with love. I have no doubt Chelsea that you WILL be a raised bed farmer 🙂
Wow, thank you Kathe! I’m so glad you liked that photo so much. It’s one of my favorites too! I’m definitely going to be the next raised garden bed farmer… bring it on!
I absolutely love how this turned out! I hope you’ll keep us updated on how well the plants do!! Looks fab!
Oh you bet I will! I’ll probably be posting like crazy when my veggies actually start growing! Thank you so much, Angela!
Great photos! This is something I want to do eventually. I just planted some flower beds for the first time ever this year so if that goes well and I don’t kill them all I may try this next year for some veggies!
Yes! Do try! It’s really not that hard of a project. I was surprised! I hope your flower beds flourish this year 🙂
