Disclaimer: This is an old photo. We look like babies. I desperately miss my long hair.
1. Mashed potatoes. Yes, you read that right. We’ve disagreed on the preparation of mashed potatoes, well, since the first time we made them together. Cory likes all of the peel taken off of the potato and when I say all of the peel, I mean God forbid there’s a speck of peel left on the potato. And chunks? Those potatoes better be smooth as butter, baby. Me? Not so much. I like my potatoes with a little chunk and a lot of peel. My dad always taught us to eat the peel of the potatoes– “that’s where all the nutrients are”– he’d tell us. I’m not sure if that’s laziness or the truth, but either way, I like peels in my potatoes. We have compromised slightly on this issue and Cory does leave a couple chunks in the mashed potatoes just for me. It’s the little things in life.
2. Sheets. We’ve literally got in a yelling match because I disagreed with him so strongly on how to put the sheet on the bed. Cory says that the sheet’s supposed to go onto the bed so that the print is on the underside. That way, when you turn-up the corner of the bed, the pattern on the sheets shows. And I think that’s totally bogus. Who puts a sheet on a bed upside-down?! I mean, really?
3. Where the syrup goes. This isn’t something we’ve necessarily argued about out loud, but something I’ve argued with him inside of my own head I guess. Growing up we always put our syrup in the fridge. I’m not sure why or if it’s even technically supposed to go in the fridge, but I found it quite odd when Cory corrected me one day after we first started living together when I went to put the syrup away in the fridge. I just kind of shrugged and put it away in the cupboard, but I think about this exact thing every single time I put the syrup away. Please tell me… WHERE DOES THE SYRUP REALLY BELONG?!
4. Putting things away. This sounds a bit trivial, doesn’t it? Who could have an argument over actually putting things away. Let me explain… I hate clutter. I can’t stand it. If there are papers laying out on the counter they need to be put away. Cory on the other hand could care less. His equilibrium is totally and completely fine with papers strewn about missing their home. I can’t even begin to tell you how many arguments we’ve had over misplaced documents and bills and most recently a misplaced wrench. (I still don’t know where I put that stupid thing away.) My take? We’ve been together almost 5 years now. He knows I put things away and if he doesn’t want something to disappear then he should just put it away himself. Right? ::winks::
Despite all of these silly little arguments I really do love him. And after my blood is finished boiling over the fact that he put the sheets on upside down again, I’m just thankful that he actually put a sheet on the bed in the first place. I know there’s more important things in life that we could argue about like religion and politics, but those are things that we actually agree on. Thank goodness. Isn’t it funny what some couples argue about though? I thought that Mandy’s post on this similar subject was just hilarious!
Honestly, I’m just thankful we both put the toilet paper roll on the holder the correct way because if he wasn’t an “over” person, he’d be 6′ under 😉
What silly little things do you and your significant other disagree on?
HAHA! oh my goodness, I’m with you on the potatoes, the sheets and the syrup!
As far as the clutter goes- it’s the other way around here. I know where I leave my stuff. David constantly leaves a trail behind him but when he “cleans up”, he doesnt’ remember where he put ANYTHING! I love a Dr note for Fin for 3 days before I finally found it in a basket by the front door and nowhere near where I’d put it.
Oh man. Andrew and I will never agree on why I want the bed made. He thinks it’s silly because we are just going to sleep it in it again and it’s not worth making it. I have to admit that during school it’s really practical to make it because I do all of my homework on my bed and mess it up anyway.
oh I love this! I have to say I agree with…:
Mashed Potatoes: You
Sheets: Cory
Syrup: Both
Putting Things Away: You
Oh gosh, this is just TOO funny! I am totally a girl who loves my mashed potatoes without the peel. My roommate and I disagree on mashed potatoes too because she likes the instant potatoes from the box (GROSS!!) and I like freshly mashed.
As for the syrup, mine goes in the pantry! I find that if it’s in the fridge it gets REALLY sticky and kind of hard to pour.
Last but not least, the sheets — my mom says the same thing!! Why would you put the print upside down? I want to be laying in bed and be able to see the cute print as I’m reading a book or doing homework, ya know?
I’m a slightly lumpy, slightly unpeeled mashed potato eater. Daniel is the opposite.
I have never heard of putting the sheet upside down but I think the concept is adorable for a guy to think of, but no.
I only put syrup in the fridge if it says to refrigerate (all-natural brands), but the basic storebought syrup goes in the pantry.
Dude, sheets upside down? Just NO! & oh my gosh, my parents and I just had a conversation about syrup and where it goes, and we all agree, it goes in the pantry! So now I have to ask, do you put your PB in the fridge? I know some people who do that & I have to ask WHY?!
Syrup goes in the pantry! Cold syrup is just gross! Lol.
Ok, so sorry but I have to agree with Cory on something! The sheets!! How do you not know this? The “right” way to make a bed (and yes, if you google if you’ll see- haha) is for the flat sheet to be face down, because when you make the bed you want the pretty side to show when you fold the top portion down or make hospital corners. 😉 Also, when you go to bed at night you should be folding your sheet down over the top of your comforter/duvet/quilt so that your skin doesn’t come in contact with it and rather with the sheets, because you probably don’t wash your comforter/duvet/quilt often. Right? 😉 haha.
I’m with you though on the potatoes, putting things away and definitely the syrup! Although I think you can technically store the “fake” syrups in the cupboard (because they’re loaded with artificial stuff to make them last forever and ever), any REAL syrup has to be refrigerated! 🙂
Lol love this! Syrup was an issue for us too, but I was on his side growing up with it in the pantry. Hash . And number 4-story of our friggin life! If it’s there it will get cleaned up in some way shape or form, I hate things on the counters so that’s another thing!
Oh man haha I’d have to say that I agree with Cory on both the potatoes issue (I HATE the peel, I just can’t… ) and the sheets. Whenever you go to a hotel next pay attention, they’re always “upside down” haha
This is absolutely hilarious. I’ve never put the syrup in the fridge. Sorry, girl!
My husband & I have been together 7 years and we STILL have our little moments. Sometimes I even do things because I know it annoys him {oops!} But what’s great about you & I – neither of us have let it bother us THAT much that we threw in the towel. That’s beautiful <3
I personally love chunks of skin on the potato too…but I have to agree with him – syrup goes in the cabinet. Otherwise it gets hard and won’t come out of the bottle.
Have a great day sweet girl!
LOL love that you wrote a post like this!! I’m kinda neutral on most of the things you guys bicker about. Although, we don’t put sheets on our bed because luckily, we both hate the top sheet!! But if he insisted on a sheet, that would definitely be a cause for argument. lol
So, my thoughts:
Cory is right on the bed-making. You have to put the flat sheet upside down so when you fold it over the comforter, you can see the print – my mom and my grandmas do it this way…it must be right! 😉
Also, growing up we kept our syrup in the fridge, but my husband corrected me and said no one wants cold syrup on their pancakes, it belongs in the fridge. Restaurants keep theirs out and it doesn’t say “refrigerate after opening” on the bottle (I checked!) so it lives in the pantry now!
Sorry girl, but Cory’s right about the sheets! On the other hand, my husband and I constantly argue about which way the comforter goes, and I KNOW I’m right about that! He think the side with the tags goes at the end of the bed and the nice edge up top, but really the tag is up by the pillows and the nice edge at the bottom. He thinks it’s stupid to sleep with your face near a pile of tags. I say cut the damn things off and stop complaining lol.
I always refrigerate syrup. If it says “refrigerate after opening” it’s going in the fridge. Also, haven’t people heard of microwaves? Or a pot of hot water??? Pour some syrup in a microwave proof container and zap it before putting it on pancakes! That’s how we’ve always done it.
But omg, if you put ketchup in the fridge, Rudy WILL kill you. Don’t put cold ketchup on a hot burger or dog, but if you mention mayo is cold when you put in on your burger, he’ll probably punch you. Ha ha ha, logic apparently has no place in anywhere in the house, because we’re all a little crazy!
I’m totally with Cory on the sheets! That’s how my mom taught me how to make a bed and that’s how my grandma taught my mom!
Our syrup is always in the cupboard though it is the fake stuff 🙂
With Karly’s comment above: doesn’t ketchup always say “refrigerate after opening”?
I don’t care how my mashed potatoes are made, but I love smooth mashed potatoes.
I’ve always heard that the top sheet goes upside down, but I don’t even use a top sheet, so I don’t think it really matters.
My family has always put the syrup in the cupboard. Who wants cold syrup on their pancakes?
and I both like putting things away and not. My bedroom is never clean, but the rest of the house is. That’s probably because it’s my grandparents’ house though.
1. Mashed potatoes are so much better chunky and with a little peel.
2. I don’t even use a sheet on my bed..haha. But my Grandma has put the sheet on upside down for the same reason as Cory. I don’t understand it either.
3. I like the syrup in the fridge. I just like it better cold?
4. I’ve gone through fazes where I don’t put away things and I never can remember where they went. Therefore, I’ve become anal at putting things where I found them 😉
Haha, I dont know where the syrup goes because my husband and I argue about this too. I like it at room temperature in the cupboard and my husband will put it in the fridge and then the microwave before he serves. I dont want it hot, I don’t want it cold, I want it in the cupboard haha
1 and 2 i completely agree with you. 3 could go either way, and 4…i don’t love clutter, but i will let it go for a day or two.
Haha! I agree with you on all except I’ve changed to putting the syrup in the cupboard. 🙂 We don’t argue about it but in my head it drives me nuts that he puts dishes in the dishwasher without rinsing them off!! His reply? It’s a dishWASHER. AHH!
He knows I put things away and if he doesn’t want something to disappear then he should just put it away himself. Right?—-OMG this is us. He’s okay with clutter and it makes me anxious. He says I “move” things and I say if you don’t want it moved you betta put it away. We put the Syrup in the Cupboard. Upside down sheets? What??
Chunky potatoes for SURE! But ya know… he kind of makes sense with the sheet thing. I may have to think about this…

These are hilarious. My husband puts pickles in potato salad and doesn’t let it cool, and I dislike the pickles and like mine cold. It used to drive my husband crazy that I would forget to close the cabinet doors, but I’ve gotten better. I hate that people leave the bath mat soaking on the floor instead of throwing over the tub to dry.
For mashed potatoes it doesn’t matter to me as long as I’m eating mashed potatoes! For the sheets to be done decorative style it would be decorative side down and then flip over the comforter, that’s is how I did it when I was visual at JCP. If your not showing your sheets when you make your bed I don’t think if really matters, and you could always get plain sheets :0). Syrup goes in the fridge, just always has.
it’s so funny what people argue over! one time we got in a huge fight over the correct way to make a pb and j sandwich. seriously. but i mean come on, who doesn’t put the peanut butter and jelly on the same side?!
Love this post idea…! My bf and I have been together for just over 6 years now, and we definitely have our disagreements on various things. For example, making a cup of tea and the whether or not you put the sugar or milk in first.
When I got married, my husband refused to even USE a sheet! I’ve convinced him to since though 😉
That sheets thing is odd. Ha ha
The syrup thing reminds me of the time when James and I first were dating. I put bread in the toaster and then toasted it. He thought I was crazy because he butters and then toasts it. I told him he was going to start a fire! =) Anyway, I’ve always put the syrup in the fridge as well.
This is so funny! In our house, I change up how I make mashed potatoes depending on what I’m feeling like.. thankfully the hubs will eat just about anything! Although my favorite is probably garlic mashed red skin potatoes with some skin left on.
I’ve never heard of putting sheets on upside down but hey, now that I think about it, it kind of makes sense, just a bit. Not enough for me to change how I do it! lol
Just a few weeks ago we were at my in-laws and I noticed opened maple syrup in the pantry. How weird, I thought. I took the time to read the label and realized it actually says refrigeration is not needed! I thought maybe our brand at home did, so sure enough when I got home, I read the label, and it said the same thing. My husband of course said WHO PUTS SYRUP IN THE FRIDGE!? Then it gets all cold! Do you really want to put COLD syrup on your HOT pancakes? I felt pretty dumb afterwards lol
Anddddd I’m the messy one. Every few weeks my husband reaches his breaking point and questions what the stack of papers are on whatever piece of furniture, ledge, table, etc. and yet I just keep doing it again and again. He asks for a bill or some piece of mail? I look for it in one of the 3 piles. Lol
I like my potatoes without lumps or skin.
Sheets don’t go on upside down. That’s just weird.
Syrup in the fridge? I have never heard of such a thing.
And last but not least, I can’t stand clutter. My husband gets so mad when I throw stuff out. “You mean to tell me you needed the pile of mail that’s been sitting there for 3 months unopened? Too freaking bad!”
You guys are so cute! Hubs is the same about putting things away. He’d leave the laundry in the living room for weeks if I didn’t put it away, but atleast he washes it! Compromise! :o)
He also refrigerates our maple syrup, but takes the time to warm it before we use it. As for the sheets, I can’t recall a time when he ever put a sheet on our bed. Ever. He probably couldn’t care less which way it went on so long as it’s there!
This is so funny and something we can all relate to!! New follower! 🙂
Love this post! Gotta say – on the sheet deal – for the flat sheet –>patterned side down so it shows when you flip it. That’s what Mom always taught me 🙂
