First of all, do you call it “hot dish” or “casserole”? I guess here in the midwest we call it a “hot dish” but I really questioned whether I would actually call this a “hot dish” or a “casserole.” Thankfully with a little careful research, I learned that the difference between a “hot dish” and a “casserole” is simply based on location and a “hot dish” is a main course dish cooked in one big baking dish. It’s usually comprised of a meat, vegetable and a starch. In Minnesota and in most of the Midwest they call it a “hot dish” but everywhere else calls this exact dish a “casserole.”
There you have it! You learn something knew everyday, huh?
That all being said, I grew up on hot dishes and Hamburger Helper was a staple in my home growing up. It was an easy meal my parents could throw together, add a vegetable on the side and a slice of bread with butter and BAM! a meal was created! I rarely remember a time when we weren’t sitting around the table around 5:30pm and having dinner when my mom got home from work. My dad was always more of the cook in our home during the week, as he got home earlier, but my mom would cook on special events and weekends.
And to this day, I love me some Hamburger Helper and family meal times. I remember when I was pregnant with Alea, I had a few things that I wanted to make sure that we did with her. I wanted us to make sure we read to her every night before she went to bed (which we definitely do) and I wanted us to have family dinners together every night at the dinner table. Sometimes we slack on the latter, but when we do gather around the table and it all works out with both Cory and I’s work schedule, there’s absolutely nothing better.
I love that Hamburger Helper makes it easy to do so, too. There’s nothing better than an easy, delicious, and inexpensive weeknight meal. After I get home from work, the last thing I want to do is slave away in the kitchen for an hour. I need something that comes together easy and fills everyone’s tummies.
And Hamburger Helper is more than perfect for just that!
