If there’s one thing I’m excited for Alea to learn, it’s how to read. Growing up I was a very avid reader and would literally read anything and everything I could get my hands on. Ever since Alea was just tiny I would read to her before going to bed and to this day, we still have that same routine going. We’ve moved from short board books, to rhyming books to chapter books all with Alea taking the lead.
It’s been a really amazing journey watching Alea grow to love reading. My most favorite moments are when I’m busy checking things off my to do list and all of a sudden the house is quiet. Typically with most kids you would take that to be a bad sign, that they were getting into trouble. But with Alea that usually means she’s snuggled up in her bean bag chair reading books. Just the other day I found her sitting on the floor of her bedroom with books completely surrounding her. She was “reading” to herself and telling herself stories through the pictures. It was just the sweetest thing!
I’m always looking for ways to continue to grow Alea’s love of reading. She loves being read to, she loves reading to herself, and she loves looking at picture books and creating her own stories as well. If she had her way, I would be reading to her 24/7, but that’s not always possible. Thankfully now we have Disney Story Central to help us out with that.
Disney Story Central is an app Using her tokens, the first books Alea chose were from her favorite Disney shows and movies, Sophia the First, Frozen, and Minnie Mouse. And the best part? When you register your account (just adding your name and email address) you automatically receive 4 free books! She was oohing and ahhing and turning the “pages” in no time flat. (Isn’t it amazing how well kids know how to work these apps!)
There’s two ways you can go about it. But either way, you’ve gotta grab this app for your little(s). It’ll give you a couple quiet minutes to yourself and the way it’s teaching Alea to read and fostering her love of reading is amazing to me.
A La Carte: You can purchase tokens in the Disney Story Central app or on the Disney Story Central website. Each token can be redeemed for 1 book on the app and will send your little one on a imaginative story reading adventure!
Subscription: You can also pay $7.99 per month for a subscription to the app which will provide your little with unlimited access to all of the stories that are available. This is an especially good deal if you have multiple little ones using the app or if your little(s) are avid readers and always requesting new stories! You can purchase the subscription the same way you would tokens through the app or the website.
No matter how you decide to enjoy this fun app, I know your kiddo(s) will love it and no matter what, your little will be growing their love of reading!
Disney is also hosting a summer reading program entitled “Midsummer Light Reads” which will go from 6/11/15 to 8/13/15. This program provides weekly Disney-themed reading options for kids where they can earn badges to unlock free books and enter the Midsummer Light Reads sweepstakes.
