I was inspired a couple of years ago by a story of a father who read to his daughter every single night. They started when she was in fourth grade and read a total of 3,218 days in a row. Alea was just a year old when I read that story, but I was determined to read her at least one book every night. Sometimes she’s too tired and of course there are the nights when she’s at Grandma’s house, but try as we might, I’m determined to continue our sweet little reading routine for as long as she’ll let me.
It may be August, but it’s never too late to start and share a summer reading list, is it? Alea’s love of chapter books for her bedtime story and story times throughout the day is in full swing right now and I’m taking full advantage. We’re going to see how many books we can read before school starts. I don’t think we’ll stop there, though– I love our little one chapter per night bedtime routine!
Alea’s Summer Reading List:
1. Stuart Little by, E.B. White
2. Fantastic Mr. Fox by, Roald Dahl
3. The Little House on the Prairie by, Laura Ingalls Wilder
4. Pippi Longstocking by, Astrid Lindgren
Books We’ve Read:
1. The BFG by Roald Dahl
2. Misty the Abandoned Kitten
3. James and the Giant Peach
4. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Some of Alea’s books are from when I was a kid (which I love) but several of them are also from ThriftBooks.com. They have a huge selection of used books (both good for the environment and your wallet) and even provide free shipping on orders over $10 and all orders ship within 24 hours– perfect for when you finished your book a couple nights early and you need a new book ASAP! They even have a bargain section with specially marked books that you can get 2 books for $7, 3 books for $10 or 4 books for $12. What a steal!
Funny enough, the reading doesn’t stop after we finish our nightly chapter. She stays up a little longer and reads a chapter of another book to “the ninja turtles.” Talk about hilarious! She goes page by page and reads to her pretend audience and it makes me beyond excited for when she can read me a chapter from her book for real each night.
