If there’s one thing we love in our house, it’s a hot cup of hot cocoa. Especially in the midst of a brutal winter and especially on snow days– we had two in a row last week! Sometimes I wonder why in the world we live in a place where we get stuck in our homes because of the snow, but then I remember we probably wouldn’t want to drink a steaming hot cup of hot cocoa if we lived in a tropical climate! And boy would I miss that and the nostalgia that comes with it.
I was just talking to a friend about how fun it was when we were kids to watch the news bright and early in the morning after a snowfall anticipating our school’s name to scroll across the bottom of the screen. I miss those moments! And then it was time for lots of sledding, shoveling for fun, and playing outside. Then warming up with a delicious hot cup of cocoa when you were finally convinced to come inside to warm up!
1. 1 cups of unsweetened cocoa powder
2. 2 cups of powdered sugar
3. 2 cups of powdered milk
1. Combine all the ingredients and stir well to get any lumps out.
2. Store in an air-tight container.
3. When ready to serve, scoop 1/2 cup into a mug of hot water or milk and stir.
4. Don’t forget the marshmallows or whipped cream!
Alea thoroughly enjoyed her hot cocoa and I thoroughly enjoyed serving her up a hot cocoa mix with far fewer ingredients than the store bought variety. It’s so fun to really take a step back, assess my mess of a pantry and figure out what we can toss and recreate ourselves. You know what I mean? It just amazes me that we have all of these conveniences and it’s so easy just grab a box of pre-packaged hot cocoa mixes, but making it yourself takes less than five minutes, a few ingredients and is even cheaper!
(I’ll just step on down from my soap box now, sorry about that!)
How do you enjoy your hot cocoa? Whipped cream? Marshmallows? Sprinkles?
Everything is better with sprinkles, let’s face it!
