As our family grows and as we investigate further into the ingredients of the products we use, we’ve been aiming to go towards a more natural home and lifestyle. It’s not easy and many of our products still aren’t 100% natural and probably never will be, but any move we make towards reducing the number of harmful chemicals in our home is the right move to me.
One ingredient I’ve looked into more recently is carrageenan. Have you heard of it? It might look a little funny and difficult to pronounce, but it’s pronounced exactly how it sounds. And that’s one of my first rules in ingredients—I need to be able to pronounce them! (Let’s just check that requirement off my list!)
Carrageenan is a natural material that comes from red seaweed found in oceans around the world. To make carrageenan, the seaweed is simply boiled and once broken down, it forms a gelatinous material that’s used in both foods and beauty products.
In beauty products it gives them thickness, texture and increases the products’ stability. Essentially, carrageenan works to bind the ingredients together, and without it, the ingredients would separate.
What You Need to Know:
1. It’s Safe: Regulatory agencies in the United States, Europe, China, Japan and Brazil have all found carrageenan safe.
2. It’s Sustainable
3. It Promotes Food Security: As you know, the world’s population just continues to increase. With more people comes more mouths to feed, and ingredients like carrageenen help deliver proudcts that are safe to even the most remote countries and locations.
4. You Can Make It: You can’t say that about every beauty product ingredient, that’s for sure. You can actually obtain the seaweed needed to make carrageenan and create the gel-like material that’s imperative to our food supply and the textures of our beauty products! How cool is that?
In this day and age, it’s becoming more and more important to do our own research and make important decisions about ingredients that may or may not be harmful to our health. However, it’s absolutely imperative that you have a reliable resource to consult when it comes to these questions and concerns. One high-quality resource you can reference is Food Science Matters. They have all of the latest research, news articles, and words of wisdom from their food safety and food science experts. Next time you consult the infinite options and non-credited sources a search engine may provide, remember you can find the most up-to-date and reliable information at Food Science Matters!
