As you know, we moved into our new home at the end of March. It’s been a slow process of moving our things in, unpacking boxes, organizing the contents of boxes that haven’t been unpacked since 3 moves ago, and digging out baby things. We’ve also been painting and adding our own special touches. It’s a work in progress, but I think I’m okay with it being that way for a while.
When you know you’re going to stay put in a place for an extended period of time, it’s especially important to love the changes you make to that space! And what’s even more important than loving the upgrades you’re making? Making sure your upgrades and your home are safe and sound!
Sure, homeowners insurance is great. It covers a wide variety of problems that could come up. In addition to it, there are two special little tools that could save you a world of stress and give you peace of mind.
This pretty little device can alert you to flooding before it gets out of hand. Install it in your basement or near an appliance you’re worried will leak. For example, we have ours hooked up near our water heater. I wish we had this device when we had our house in Minnesota on the market and we were living in Wisconsin. While we were away, our basement flooded. Not just any basement, though, it’s the basement that Cory and his dad spent endless hours sheetrocking and remodeling. The walls had watermarks 3 feet up the walls. If only we would’ve had the Lyric™ Water Leak and Freeze Detector by Honeywell. We would’ve been notified on our smartphones and been able to head up to our home before all of that damage took place.
Because of that incident, we’re always a little leery of leaving our new home. I get nervous when I see rain in the forecast for the timeframe we’ll be gone and I know Cory worries about the reliability of the new appliances. In the winter months, I know we’ll also worry when the temperature drops too low, as we have a heat pump installed that does not work when the temperature falls below a certain temperature. Not the greatest option for Wisconsin winters, but we do have back-up heat. This device will help us to monitor for the potential of frozen pipes– before the pipes ever have a chance to freeze! All of this via the Lyric™ app on our phones! Simply genius!
This product is available at Home Depot.
Remember when I said above that we have a heat pump heating system? Being 100% electrical, this isn’t the most friendly on my wallet. We’re not perfect and sometimes one of us leaves the air conditioning on when we leave the house or leave the heat up to high when we’re not even home to enjoy it. Now, with our Lyric™ Thermostat, we can program it to set the temperature when we are a certain distance away from our home. You heard that right, using the location on my phone it can set the thermostat to turn off the air conditioning after I’ve left for work for the day and then I can set it to turn back on when I’m almost home from work. Let’s face it, as a pregnant woman in the hot and humid summertime, this is an incredible feature! This is also available at Home Depot.
Needless to say, these devices will give you peace of mind. There’s really not a whole lot better that! And for that, I am so very thankful!
For those of you in a new home who don’t necessarily feel comfortable with all the new things you have to learn or if you’re moving into a new place, I couldn’t recommend these two tools more… seriously!
Tell me, how are you are connecting your home?
