I can’t lie to you. I’m a wee bit nervous for our summer bedtime routine. I love that the sun is out later in the summer and that we stay relatively busy with outdoor activities, but making sure we still maintain some bedtime consistency is going to be crucial when we’re heading into next school year. I know my little Alea thrives off of routine– even as much as she hates to admit it– so I’m trying to plan ahead and get us prepared before things get a little too out of hand this summer!
Consistency is Key: I know this may seem obvious, but putting your foot down and creating consistency is crucial! Sure, sometimes as parents we try to avoid the whining associated with bedtime and we get lazy– we’re only human– but in order to really develop a consistent bedtime routine, you need to be, well, consistent!
Have Fun: We’re always giggling while we brush our teeth and get our jammies on. As a working mom, I don’t get a whole lot of time with Alea each week night after work, so getting those giggles in while I can is crucial. We talk about her day, tell silly jokes (some I’m hearing for the 5th time that day) and I’ll sing a silly song while she brushes her teeth. Putting a smile on your face, even if you’re too darn tired to even want to deal with bedtime, can make the bedtime routine a little brighter for everyone!
Make Oral Care Fun: Like I said, I like to sing a song to help Alea know how long to brush her teeth and add a little silliness, but we also like to have awesome tooth brushes, tooth pastes and mouth washes available. Alea’s my little tom-boy so she’s all about her light-up Firefly Kylo Ren Lightsaber tooth brush and Firefly Spiderman Fluoride Rinse! We love that the fluoride rinse comes with it’s own little cup and she enjoys pumping the mouthwash into the cup all on her own! Also, having a few extra REACH toothbrushes on hand is crucial– did you know you’re supposed to change out your toothbrush every three months? (You can find these products at Wal-Mart, Target, and Walgreens.)
Give Choices: If bedtime is a struggle, make sure you give your little one choices so they feel like they’re in control of the process as well. Choices can start with their bedtime snack and then move on to what pair of pajamas they want to wear, and maybe even having a couple toothbrushes for them to choose from. Whatever gets them to cooperate and get their cute little butts to bed is what I say!
Trust me, my friends. Bedtime isn’t always easy in our house. Some nights I get frustrated and sometimes I get lazy and break us of our strict 8pm bed time, but let me tell you, I notice a difference on those nights and I certainly get us back on track the following night. Believe me, once you start building a consistent bedtime routine, it will become easier and easier!
Bonus: Firefly recently launched their Lights, Camera, Smiles! sweepstakes on the Firefly Facebook page. One lucky grand prize winner will win a trip for a family of four to the movie capital of the world: Hollywood! How fun would that be? If you win, can you pretty please take me!?
