We’ve just about completed our very first week of first grade around these parts and I’m happy to say that we’re surviving. Even with my less than perfect memory (I blame pregnancy) and the difficulty we usually have adjusting to a new schedule and a new normal. Alea seems to be adjusting well to 1st grade and for that, I am so very thankful. I’m hoping she continues to do better and better!
Needless to say, this week wouldn’t have gone smoothly if we hadn’t prepared at least a little bit for what was to come. I firmly believe that getting kids back into a routine prior to the start of school is one of the major keys to success, but it’s also important to make sure you’re ready for all the extra papers that come home from school, all the extra dates you’ll have to remember and so on and so forth. It’s not easy, that’s for sure.
1. A Calendar: Truthfully I couldn’t live without my calendar on my phone and my planner. There’s just not a chance. I need to write out everything. When library books are due, what days Alea has gym class, what days she agrees to eat hot lunch at school and when school pictures are. You name it, it’s in my planner and on the calendar!
2. Set Alarms: I set alarms on my phone for literally everything. Aside from the ones set to get my butt out of bed in the morning, I have alarms set to remind me to take the garbage can out to the curb and an alarm set to go off when each bill of the month is due. I’m the kind of person who needs constant reminders, so this works extremely well to keep me on time and on track!
3. Schedule Appointments: Don’t forget to schedule the necessary appointments to keep your kids up to date on everything. This can get complicated since school has started for most kids now, but don’t forget their 6 month dental check up, their yearly eye exam and their yearly visit with their doctor. Gotta keep those kids healthy and strong and ready to go for school! Then after your kids have their eyes checked, they can pick-up some awesome glasses at JC Penney’s Optical Store! Total bonus, right? (And I literally just took a break from writing this post to put an alarm in my phone to remind me to schedule Alea’s dentist appointment for her next day off of school!)
4. Prepare the Night Before: 9 times out of 10 we have just about everything laid out the night before ready to go for school the next day. Cory’s in charge of getting Alea to school in the morning, but I do my very best to help him out the night before because I know how hectic those mornings can be! I love to lay out her outfits for the entire week on Sunday night and then we make sure her folder is in her back pack and her lunch box is empty the night before. It just makes everything run a whole lot smoother!
FYI — JC Penney Optical is having a Labor Day Sale! Hurry– this offer ends on 9/9/16! Two pairs for $99.99 plus free no-line bifocals! If you’re in the market for back-to-school glasses, you’ve gotta check them out. Their frames are strong and durable for even the craziest kiddos and they come in all shapes, sizes, colors and patterns!
And for the record, you can always treat yourself to a new pair of glasses for back-to-school. It doesn’t have to be all about the kids after all, now does it? It’s only fair that us mamas get a little something special as well!
